home about broadcasts & awards poems books links contact feeds: posts comments on horkstow hill june 5, 2018 by alisonbr having eluded the dalek in the foyer of new broadcasting house, i contributed to bbc radio 4’s arts programme, ‘front row’ on friday 7 september between 7.15 and 7.45 pm. the programme is available online: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0bgp8gr i was asked to write a new poem for the programme. in view of what i did to my villanelle, i am surprised i was not exterminated! the poem can be read on my (dalek-free) ‘poems’ page… meanwhile… aunt margaret’s pudding this is my latest, very special book. its ingredients come from another book: a small, black oilskin notebook written by my grandmother, dorothy eliza barnes – dot. i knew dot as a shepherd’s wife, but in her edwardian youth she had worked as a professional cook. here were her recipes, begun a century ago: ‘puzzle pudding’, ‘feather cake’… i closed dot’s book and began to write poems. they are not nostalgic. in the 1930s, she fed the unemployed men who tramped round the lincolnshire farms. the poems of ‘aunt margaret’s pudding’ have been widely published in journals (including ‘the spectator’ and ‘the new statesman’). few things reach deeper into our lives than food! ‘aunt margaret’s pudding’ also offers, in prose, dot’s eventful life, with its sorrows, its humour, (and chimneys, cleaned with gunpowder!). readers who do not care for poetry have pored over this. they have also appreciated an ingredient which is unusual for a poetry book: recipes! a selection of dot’s original recipes appear as illustrations, in her own meticulous handwriting. there are also carefully updated and tested versions, which can be used successfully even by cooks as erratic as me, who do not immediately know the equivalent of dot’s ‘sharp oven’ in centigrade. i particularly recommend ‘flamberries pudding’, veined with luscious jam… please do not burn your mouth! ‘aunt margaret’s pudding’ can be bought safely at www.happenstancepress.com (a really quick site to buy from!) or from the poetry book society https://www.poetrybooks.co.uk/products/aunt-margarets-pudding-by-alison-brackenbury and from other online retailers. i am delighted to report that some readers who have bought the book for themselves are now buying extra copies as presents… in some cases for people who do not normally read poetry! for this, my gratitude is due to the cakes and puddings in dot’s superb recipes, which readers, even those new to cooking, are already making (and devouring). it is also due to the editing and highly professional recipe-testing of helena nelson of happen stance press. i think dot would have approved! ‘ “both plain and delicate”… aunt margaret’s pudding is both unfussily elegant of language and full of rich humanity. better cooks than me tell me the book is worth having for the recipes alone; i want it for the poems.’ glyn pursglove, acumen radio 4 programme featuring ‘aunt margaret’s pudding’ the puddings, prose and poems of my new book featured in a radio 4 programme called ‘what sweetness touched your tongue?’, broadcast on june 17, 2018. this was a ‘radio times’ choice . jane anderson commented: ‘brackenbury’s empathetic poetry reflects this unique and very tasty slice of social history’. it was also featured in radio 4’s ‘pick of the week’ . john waite described ‘what sweetness – ’ as ‘a mouth-watering programme’. it was also chosen as a ‘pick of the week’ in ‘the observer’ , where kim salmons praised it as ‘a beautiful and evocative account of a life told through the language of food’. readings 2018 september 27 narberth museum, church street, narberth sa67 7ag. some open mic slots can be booked in advance. tickets £5. https://www.narberthmuseum.co.uk/event/an-evening-of-poetry-with-special-guest-alison-brackenbury/ october 12 th poets’ café, reading at south street arts centre, 21 south street, reading, rg1 4qu. doors open at 8 pm, poetry starts at 8.30 pm, the evening is scheduled to end at 10.30 pm.entry costs £5 and £4 for concessions (including those reading in the open mic).only one one-page poem per poet in the open mic please! https://clairedyer.com/poets-cafe-2/ if you are interested in booking me for a reading, you are most welcome to get in touch (without obligation) via the contact page on this site! thank you. news.. my ‘selected poems’ will be published by carcanet in february 2019. i am excited about this because i have a couple of decades of ‘lost poems’. they first appeared in journals, books, on bbc radio. they are my old friends. but as i could not do many readings for a long time, and as these poems slipped out of print, they are quite unknown to many of my present readers. so i look forward to their return, in print and on the air… i have some readings in the pipeline already for 2019. but i am keen to do more, with this fresh set of poems! if you think i might be of use for any event you’re organising, do feel free to get in touch, via my contact page, without obligation… on horkstow hill three sheepdogs, at watchful rest. a limestone hillside in lincolnshire, with the dry grass of summer blowing in the perpetual wind, and a glint of sky above the great river humber, just out of view. a huddle of sheep at a trough: cleaner, fatter and more cossetted than those you will see on today’s under-staffed farms. these were show sheep, cared for by shepherds with four generations of knowledge behind their confident movements and their slow, deliberate speech. the shepherds were fred, my tall grandfather and gordon, my handsome uncle: dot’s husband and son. i have a confession to make. at the time of this photograph, when i was about ten, more articulate but much clumsier than gordon or fred, it was their world i longed for, not dot’s. they were outside, with the wind, the sheep, the dogs. they even had a horse and cart which they drove up the rough track to the lambing hut. i loved dot, but i was not drawn to the darkness of her north-facing kitchen, with its one small window, and the door to her well-ordered pantry. but life tilts, like the slope of the hill. the rough-coated bay horse, wide as a table, whom i rode bareback (safely led!) to pasture, was the last of her line. the next horse shied and reared at the lorries thundering towards the site of the new humber bridge. the cart was given up. the showing of sheep, a passion of rich victorian farmers, continued on that farm until my uncle died. but the old farmer who craved his yearly cups and medals was also dead. the romney marsh show flock was sold. shepherds are still needed, but not for the refinements and the time-consuming care for which my grandfather’s family had been renowned. behind these tall men, the sheep, the showing, the annual triumphant exodus to the royal show, was a tiny woman: dot. she washed the shirts, she cleaned the house, she stayed up all night and filled the battered show trunk with a week’s worth of home-cooked food. even with the kind help of a neighbour, who cooked and did the washing, my grandfather only outlived her by two years. gordon, getting by on shop cake and pans of bacon, died just before his (unwanted) retirement. what i did not foresee was that dot’s skills, recorded in the small neat script of her notebook, would survive. i cannot shear sheep – and i do not need to. i do need to cook, and i still turn to that notebook for dot’s recipes, perfected by her years of practice and purpose. i knew the fruits of those recipes mainly in the happy formality of her great sunday teas. but, although my mother, like dot, never drove, my father learnt to, in the army lorries of the second world war. for the rest of his working life, he was a farm lorry driver, for the same wealthy farmer who employed his father. so before breakfast, in the summer holiday from primary school, i once rode in the loud lorry with my father all the way to horkstow, where he was needed all day. i spent that day with dot. wh
